Everything Happens for a Reason

They say everything happens for a reason.

When a setback forced us to host 4-week pottery wheel throwing classes at Zerimar Clay instead of Ceramic’s on 10th, I thought how lucky that we were only open on weekends and were able to accommodate. Now I see it as a little bit of serendipity because two of those wheel classes have turned into colored clay classes and allow people to dive a little deeper than the one time weekend classes enabled them to do, it also brings life into the space during the week and builds a post-work community. Registration for our second set of 4-weekers goes live in just a few minutes, maybe one day classes can grow to six, eight, twelve, or even fourteen weeks.

Its official

A lease has been signed and Zerimar Clay is to become a brick and mortar studio opening in August of 2023!

Theres a lot of unknowns such as will we continue to sell colored clay or just switch to the education of the ceramic arts? Who knows, but Its going to be a blast getting everything set up and ready. 49 shades of seven colors have already been tested and I personally am excited and looking forward to the months to come.

Hindsight is 20/20

Interesting that the last post from over a year ago was not only titled big changes, but also tied to celestrial events. Not only are we in the midst of a solar eclipse but we are also about to enter Mercury in retrograde. I feel its a great time to announce that Zerimar clay is entering its next state of being. Zerimar is going to become a brick and mortar studio in Manhattan, New York! I am excited to be able to announce that in the next months we will be open on the weekends and offering one-time wheel neriage classes as well as nerikomi/neriage classes during the week for 8-week terms. Much much more information including our address is to be shared in the coming days/weeks. Though we may wait until Mercury is out of retrograde.

Big Changes

The 2021 Cold moon has passed and it was a time of closure. One of many closures for me is the closure of zerimar clay in its former state. Zerimar clay’s website had the caption, “clay and glazes for potters” and I have changed it to “Holistic healing, nourish the mind, body, and spirit”. Life has been bringing me together with people with a similar mindset of getting their mind, body, and spirit aligned and in homeostasis, and I feel zerimar has much more to offer than clay.

Speaking of clay, I am going to continue selling clay after all but I am going to try to sell it in dry form that can be reconstituted and then wedged up. We will see how that goes.

In the meantime look out for all the cultures that I have been growing to be available as well as touch therapy sessions and even card readings. May we all manifest the utmost in health and happiness.

New Clay is Available but please read before purchasing

Hello Everyone!

We have not had clay available since the holidays and are excited to offer it again!

Please note that we have returned to our original recipe and are including black grog as a colorant. This is only important if you purchased the last batch over the holidays where the clay was colored with mason stains as a way to “cut corners”. This clay will be much more abrasive than the last batch. I will post samples of it soon!

Underglaze Decal application instructions

Underglaze transfers are ceramic underglazes which are silk screened onto rice paper. They can be transferred to the surface of greenware or bisque clay and fired from cone 06-10.

To apply the underglaze transfer to clay, mist the surface of greenware with water using a spray bottle.

Apply the transfer, with the printed side down, to the surface of the greenware.

Use a very lightly dampened sponge to pat the back of the transfer paper.

Wait a few moments and then use a soft rib, stone or spoon to burnish the back of the transfer paper.

Carefully pull back the paper to check if the image has been transferred. If the transfer is patchy or incomplete, put the paper back in place and continue to blot and burnish the back until the image has been transferred.

When the image has been transferred, you can remove and discard the paper.

Zero3 Clay

Have you Heard of Zero3 clay bodies? They are low fire clay bodies that mature at low fire temperatures. A lot of us who have worked at low temperature enjoy the range of colors and the reduced amount of energy needed to mature work but noticed that most commercial offerings of clays rated for 04-06 have 15% porosity! This is why we have often taken low fire red earthenware to cone 6 in the kiln with minimal issues, because it truly matured around cone 4-5. This clay, developed by Tony Hansen, will slump and melt into a puddle at higher temperatures, its the real deal.

The website digitalfire.com has done all of the work for us and defines these clays as cone 03 fritware bodies.

Here are links in case you are interested in learning more about these amazing clay bodies, we just made one today based on the porcelain recipe and will keep you posted via instagram (ZerimarClay) and here to let you know how its going.
